SAIC Motor’s 1st ocean vehicle carrier to be put into use by 2024

SAIC Motor’s first custom-built ocean-going car carrier ship (RO-RO ship), which was produced by Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co, was officially launched on Aug 29.

The ship, which is equipped with LNG dual-fuel technology and low-carbon environmental protection and can accommodate 7,600 vehicles, is expected to be put into use next year and on SAIC Motor’s sea routes to Europe, Australia and New Zealand. From 2024 to 2026, 12 new ocean vehicle carriers will be launched by SAIC Motor’s Anji Logistics Co, and included in the group’s ocean-going fleet. At the same time, SAIC Motor will maintain long-term friendly cooperation with domestic and foreign car logistics companies such as China COSCO Shipping Group and WWL to promote the global expansion of Chinese self-owned vehicle brands.

In recent years, SAIC Motor has witnessed its sales surge in overseas markets. Official data showed that in 2022, the carmaker’s overseas sales exceeded 1.01 million units, a year-on-year increase of 45.9 percent, ranking first among domestic car companies for seven consecutive years. SAIC Motor’s MG brand was the most popular Chinese brand in overseas markets for the fourth year in a row.

From January to July this year, SAIC Motor sold 630,000 vehicles in its overseas markets, maintaining its rapid growth and leading position in the industry. MG brand sold 135,000 vehicles in the European market in the January-July period, a 148 percent year-on-year increase, while MG was ranked at the forefront in vehicle sales in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Sweden. Cumulative sales of MG reached 35,000 in Australia in the first seven months of the year, ensuring the brand maintained its position among the top 10 in terms of vehicle sales.
